May 21: First day of work

May 21:
This was my first day working at the animal rescue center. I was placed on the primates’ team and this was by far the most difficult team. We had to work from 6:30 am till around 4/5 every day. Our duties included preparing breakfast and lunch, cleaning enclosures, and creating enrichments for 110 different primates. At some point during the day we also always have a “special project” which means I usually have to clean another animal’s swimming pool such as the black bears’ pool. Doing this work all day was extremely tough, especially in 90-degree weather. The different primates included macaques and gibbons, each with their own name, personality, and background story. The majority of these monkeys came from the illegal pet trade or tourism business. Tourists would pay money to use the baby animals as photo props without knowing that they are usually drugged.

This night we also went to a nearby bat cave and witnessed the bats leave their cave at night to hunt!
